Fifty-six female candidates, representing 20 per cent of 286 candidates, made the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) final list for the forthcoming Enugu State House of Assembly election.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Enugu State House of Assembly has 24 members representing the state constituencies.
The INEC final list was displayed on Monday at the Enugu State headquarters of INEC as well as in various council offices of INEC.
The document contained the personal credentials of all 286 candidates contesting the state assembly positions.
The list indicated that 15 political parties fielded candidates for the assembly positions.
The political parties include: All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Others are Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The rest are Action Democratic Party (ADP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Action Alliance (AA), National Rescue Movement (NRM) and Labour Party (LP).
It was gathered that most of the candidacy slots, or positions, came from two political parties.
From the records, Action Alliance (AA) has 12 female candidates and Action Democratic Party (ADP) has 10 female candidates.
Those pushing for more female political office holders have intensified efforts to achieve relative parity between male and female candidates contesting the assembly election.
However, at the Enugu State Governorship position, it is an all-male 16-candidate race, with incumbent Gov. Peter Mbah (APC), former Minister Chief Uchenna Nnaji (PDP) and former Federal Permanent Secretary, Chief Chinyeaka Ohaa (NDC), leading the pack.
