Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, three days before his 72nd birthday.
His family announced his death in a statement issued on Monday and signed by his son, Toju Uduaghan, who said the former governor died in the early hours of October 19, 2026.
The family described Uduaghan as a source of strength, a father figure and a respected elder whose death would be deeply felt by his loved ones and the wider community.
His death, the statement said, was a profound loss to the family, Delta State and Nigeria.
Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007 before becoming governor in 2007.
He governed the state for two consecutive terms, leaving office in 2015.
A medical doctor by training, Uduaghan played a prominent role in Delta State politics and remained active in the political space after completing his tenure as governor.
He later contested for the Delta South Senatorial District seat in the 2019 general elections and rejoined the All Progressives Congress in May 2025.
His death comes ahead of his birthday on October 22.
The family has not disclosed the cause of death or announced funeral arrangements
