The chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas of Delta State have visited the scene of Sunday’s petrol tanker explosion in Agbor, which destroyed buildings and damaged vehicles.
The council chairmen, Monday Odigwe of Ika South and Jerry Ehiwarior of Ika North-East, visited the site less than 24 hours after the incident along the Lagos–Asaba Expressway.
They inspected the remains of a two-storey building, damaged vehicles and other property affected by the inferno but declined to comment on the incident, saying they would brief Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Shop owners and sympathisers gathered at the scene on Monday to examine the destruction caused by the fire.
The tanker driver was still missing as of the time of the visit, with some residents expressing fears that he might have been trapped in the blaze. However, his whereabouts had not been officially confirmed.
The explosion reportedly occurred after the petrol-laden tanker suffered brake failure, lost control and collided with a car, triggering a fire that spread to nearby buildings and vehicles.
The full extent of the damage and whether the incident resulted in any fatalities or injuries had yet to be officially established.
The incident has renewed concerns about the dangers posed by petrol tanker accidents on busy highways and the risks to residents and businesses located close to major roads.
