Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has begun a five-day working visit to Rwanda to strengthen military cooperation and explore joint strategies for tackling security threats across Africa.
Shaibu arrived in Kigali on Sunday for the October 18 to 23 engagement at the invitation of the Rwanda Defence Force Army Chief of Staff, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi.
He was received by Nyakarundi and Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Rwanda, Ambassador Ibrahim Zanna.
According to a statement posted by the Nigerian Army on X, the visit will provide an opportunity for both countries to exchange operational experiences, improve defence cooperation and develop common approaches to security challenges.
The Army said the engagement “will provide opportunities for both armies to share operational experiences, deepen defence collaboration and explore joint approaches to counterterrorism, emerging security challenges and regional stability.”
Discussions are expected to focus on counterterrorism, professional military exchanges, capacity development and regional stability.
The visit also aligns with the Nigerian Army’s efforts to strengthen partnerships with other African military institutions and improve its capacity to respond to evolving security threats.
The Army said the engagement underscored Shaibu’s commitment to “strengthening African military partnerships, fostering mutual capacity development and promoting collective security in line with the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda.”
Further details of the meetings and outcomes are expected as the visit progresses.
