No fewer than five people were feared dead on Saturday after a diesel tanker crashed into four commercial Nissan Micra cars along the Iwo Road–Ojoo Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The accident occurred at Aduloju Bus Stop, opposite Dominion City, leaving the cars badly mangled and prompting rescue efforts by emergency responders.

Preliminary reports attributed to the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority indicated that the tanker driver lost control of the vehicle while travelling at high speed. Brake failure was suspected to have caused the truck to veer into the cars.

Eyewitnesses said bystanders rushed to rescue passengers trapped in the wreckage before the arrival of emergency teams.

Officials of OYRTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were deployed to the scene to coordinate rescue operations, manage traffic and prevent further danger to road users.

The wreckage was being cleared to restore traffic flow along the busy expressway.

However, authorities had yet to confirm the number of fatalities, identify the victims or provide an official account of those injured as of the time of filing this report.

Motorists using the Iwo Road–Ojoo axis were advised to exercise caution and observe speed limits.
