The Osun State Government has stepped up its crackdown on indiscriminate waste disposal, with the state Amotekun Corps arresting more than 30 people in Osogbo and neighbouring areas.

The arrests were made during a midnight enforcement operation on Tuesday, following the recent constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force by the state government.

The suspects were arrested for allegedly dumping refuse on roads, streets and drainage channels in violation of the state’s environmental regulations.

The operation was conducted by Amotekun operatives in collaboration with environmental sanitation officials as part of efforts to prevent blocked drainage channels, flooding and other hazards associated with indiscriminate waste disposal.

The arrested persons were handed over to environmental sanitation officials for further investigation and possible prosecution under relevant state laws.

Speaking in Osogbo, the Corps Commander, Adekunle Omoyele, said the enforcement was necessary because refuse dumped in drainage channels could obstruct the flow of rainwater and worsen flooding.

He said the operation was not designed to inconvenience law-abiding residents but to ensure compliance with the government’s sanitation directives.

Omoyele urged residents to stop dumping waste in unauthorised locations and use the waste collection services provided by the state.

He said refuse trucks had been assigned to collect household waste from residents, urging them to properly package their waste and hand it over to designated collectors.

The commander warned that Amotekun and environmental officials would continue to enforce the state’s sanitation regulations to curb indiscriminate dumping.
