The Anambra State Police Command has opened disciplinary proceedings against an inspector and ordered queries for two senior officers over the disappearance of an armed robbery suspect from police custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Nnanna Ama, also directed the command’s X-Squad to investigate how the suspect was arrested, detained, and subsequently became unaccounted for.
The directives followed a viral video alleging that the suspect, who was reportedly arrested and taken to the 3-3 Police Station, could no longer be found in police custody.
Police spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, said Ama personally interviewed the complainant and officers involved on October 5 before issuing the directives.
The Commissioner ordered queries for the Divisional Police Officer of the 3-3 Police Station and a Deputy Superintendent of Police, while directing immediate disciplinary proceedings against an inspector.
Ama described the allegation as serious and capable of undermining public confidence in the police.
He said the command would not tolerate “unprofessional conduct, dereliction of duty, abuse of office or compromise of established procedures” by its personnel.
The X-Squad investigation will cover the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s arrest and detention, the documentation of his custody and his subsequent whereabouts, as well as the responsibilities of the officers involved.
The Commissioner also directed that operational measures be put in place to facilitate the arrest of the missing suspect.
Ama assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made known once the facts were established.
He, however, cautioned against circulating unverified information that could prejudice the investigation, stressing that the matter would be handled through due process.
The police commissioner said accountability remained central to his leadership of the command, adding that no officer was above scrutiny or the established disciplinary process.
