The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 20-year-old suspected vandal and recovered four bags of aluminium electricity cables in Danbatta Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State.
The suspect, Jamilu Inusa of Kauyen Mudu village, was arrested on Friday, October 2, while allegedly transporting the vandalised cables in a Volkswagen Golf Wagon.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Kano State NSCDC Command, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.
According to the statement, NSCDC operatives on patrol around 4:15am acted on credible intelligence before intercepting Inusa and the vehicle, with registration number KMC 656 ZJ.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of four bags containing aluminium conductor cables concealed in a compound in Danbatta.
“The vehicle was used to convey the vandalised items by the suspect in our custody,” the statement said.
The Corps identified the recovered materials as bare-stranded aluminium wires, including ACSR and AAC types commonly used on 33KV, 11KV and low-voltage electricity distribution lines.
The NSCDC said two other prime suspects linked to the alleged vandalism remained at large, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest them.
It warned that the theft and destruction of electricity infrastructure posed a threat to public safety and economic activities.
The State Commandant, Mohammed Agalama, commended the Danbatta operatives for their vigilance and urged residents to provide security agencies with credible information on activities threatening critical national assets.
The Corps said the suspect would face appropriate legal action after the conclusion of investigations.
