Chelsea produced a ruthless attacking display to thrash Bournemouth 5-1, while Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 in Saturday’s Premier League matches.
The results contrasted with Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, as Aston Villa also dropped points after being held 2-2 by Brentford.
Chelsea made a flying start at Stamford Bridge, scoring twice within the opening three minutes to put Bournemouth under immediate pressure.
The hosts added a third goal early in the second half before Bournemouth pulled one back five minutes later.
Chelsea responded with two more goals in the 67th and 70th minutes to complete the 5-1 victory.
Despite scoring five times, Chelsea managed only seven shots, with four on target. They also finished without a booking, while four Bournemouth players received yellow cards.
At the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal had to recover after Leeds took the lead in the 55th minute.
The Gunners equalised seven minutes later before scoring the winner in the 70th minute to secure a 2-1 victory.
Arsenal controlled 59 per cent of possession and registered 14 shots against Leeds’ 10. The visitors received four yellow cards, compared with one for the hosts.
Aston Villa and Brentford shared four goals in an entertaining encounter at Villa Park.
Brentford struck first in the 10th minute, but Villa responded two minutes later to level the score.
Villa moved ahead in the 77th minute, only for Brentford to equalise two minutes later and earn a 2-2 draw. Brentford received five yellow cards, while Villa had two players booked.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur in the evening fixture.
Elsewhere, Ipswich Town defeated Fulham 2-1, while Brighton and Hove Albion secured a 2-0 away win over Sunderland.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s fixtures, with Liverpool set to host Manchester City at Anfield at 4.30pm Nigerian time in one of the weekend’s major clashes.
