Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation as it investigates the circumstances surrounding his departure from the national team’s training camp.

The federation’s Disciplinary Council confirmed the decision on Saturday, October 10, following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the Al-Nassr forward.

According to Portuguese public broadcaster RTP, the council decided on October 9 to investigate the matter after receiving a report on October 7.

The federation said in a statement that “a non-automatic provisional suspension of the player was imposed”.

The case was referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Commission on October 10 and classified as urgent. The governing body added that details of the proceedings would remain confidential until the investigation was concluded.

Ronaldo’s suspension follows his departure from Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30 amid a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the team.

The 41-year-old forward has reportedly apologised for leaving the camp and indicated that he would accept any punishment imposed by the federation.

“I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine,” Ronaldo said in a statement quoted by beIN SPORTS.

The Portugal captain also apologised to his international teammates and ruled out retiring from international football, according to the broadcaster.

RTP further reported that Ronaldo had expressed his willingness to return to the national team.

The federation has yet to announce a final sanction, as the disciplinary investigation remains ongoing.

The provisional suspension does not amount to a final disciplinary verdict, and the federation has not disclosed what punishment the forward could face if found liable.
