A 55-year-old motorist escaped unhurt after a train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos, leaving the vehicle extensively damaged.

The train was travelling towards Agege when it rammed into the car, with registration number EKY 902 JT.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority said its officials, working with security personnel, rescued the driver and removed the wreckage from the tracks, allowing the train to continue its journey.

However, traffic congestion persisted around the PWD area after the incident.

LASTMA said the damaged vehicle was handed over to security personnel to aid an investigation into the circumstances of the collision.

The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the officials and security personnel for their swift response, saying their coordinated efforts demonstrated the importance of collaboration during emergencies involving railway lines and adjoining roads.

He urged motorists to exercise caution when approaching railway crossings and warned them against driving across the tracks when a train was approaching or in motion.

“Reckless disregard for railway safety protocols could precipitate devastating and irreversible consequences,” Bakare-Oki warned.

LASTMA also called on road users to comply with traffic regulations and railway safety guidelines, stressing that “the preservation of human life must remain paramount in all road-use decisions”.

The incident comes amid concerns over safety on Nigeria’s rail network. In March, the Nigerian Railway Corporation reported that 26 passengers and crew members sustained varying degrees of injuries in an incident along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor.

NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, said the incident occurred near Asham Station after a loud bang was heard as part of the train formation collided.

He said the Kaduna–Abuja service, KA-2, left Rigassa Station at 7:15 am and arrived at Jere Station at 8:52 am, one minute ahead of schedule.
