Michael Carrick is expected to remain Manchester United manager for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea despite the club’s poor run of form, according to British media reports.

The BBC, Sky Sports and the Press Association reported on Tuesday that the former United and England midfielder would take charge at Stamford Bridge as the club’s hierarchy considers his future.

United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday extended their winless run to eight matches and left them just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

Carrick arrived at the club’s Carrington training ground on Tuesday to oversee a routine training session. The BBC, citing sources, reported that he would be given an opportunity to turn the team’s fortunes around.

The 45-year-old was handed a two-year contract in May after overseeing an impressive revival as caretaker manager following the team’s struggles under Ruben Amorim. United finished third last season to secure qualification for the Champions League.

However, the club have won only two of their 12 matches in all competitions this season. Their return of seven points from eight league games is their worst start to a league campaign in 40 years.

Carrick avoided giving a direct answer about his future after the Bournemouth defeat. United supporters chanted his name at full-time, although they also expressed anger at the players and club hierarchy.

Former United midfielder Wayne Rooney criticised the players over their recent performances, saying they had failed to justify their displays.

“The players haven’t got a leg to stand on,” Rooney said on the Stick to United podcast, adding that supporters were hurt and angry by what they had witnessed on the pitch.

United will hope to arrest their slide against Chelsea as pressure continues to mount over their performances.
