The Kano State House of Assembly has extended the suspension of three local government chairmen by another three months to allow lawmakers to conclude investigations into allegations of financial misappropriation and abuse of office against them.
The affected council chairmen are Bello Abdullahi Gadanya of Bagwai, Dr Alhassan Salisu of Bebeji and Abubakar Mustapha of Rogo.
The Assembly also extended the tenure of its ad hoc committee investigating the allegations by the same period, directing it to complete its assignment and submit a report within the next three months.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Kamaluddeen Shawai.
The statement said the committee was initially given three months to investigate the allegations and submit its findings to the House.
However, following the expiration of the initial period, lawmakers approved an extension to enable the panel to examine the petitions further and conclude its assignment.
“With the expiration of the initial period, the House has now extended both the suspension of the chairmen and the mandate of the committee by another three months, to enable the committee to further examine the petitions, conclude its investigation, and submit its report to the House within the next three months,” the statement said.
The three chairmen were initially suspended over allegations of financial misappropriation, abuse of office and other acts of misconduct.
The latest decision means they will remain out of office pending the conclusion of the Assembly's investigation.
