As preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, will appear before the House Committee on Electoral Matters to brief lawmakers on the Commission’s preparedness for the polls.

The motion, which initially sought to invite the INEC Chairman to address the House in plenary, sparked disagreement among lawmakers along party lines before it was amended to refer the matter to the relevant committee.

With the countdown to the 2027 general election underway, opposition lawmakers say INEC needs to update Nigerians on its preparations. The motion sponsors argued that inviting the INEC Chairman would help raise public awareness and build confidence ahead of the polls.

The Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, however, maintained that the Commission had been proactive in keeping Nigerians informed, adding that the request for further details should be handled at the committee level.

Despite objections from some opposition lawmakers over the amendment, the House leadership defended the decision to refer the matter to the committee.

The INEC Chairman is expected to provide a detailed update on the progress of continuous voter registration, the production and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards, and the readiness of election technology and logistics ahead of the 2027 general election.
