Two opposition figures have petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged attempts to alter the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) membership register retrospectively amid the dispute over its 2027 Ogun State governorship ticket.
The petitioners, Dr Arabambi Abayomi and Professor Awofala Awolola, urged INEC to reject any purported changes to the register, arguing that such moves could violate the Electoral Act 2026 and undermine a Supreme Court ruling on the party's leadership and governorship dispute.
They made their position known at a press conference in Abuja, where they alleged that some individuals were attempting to use an affidavit to address the omission of PDP chieftain Oladipupo Adebutu from the party's membership register.
Abayomi, the Labour Party National Vice Chairman for the South-West and a former Ogun State Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, said the electoral commission must ensure that the party's membership records were not altered to accommodate individuals after the fact.
The petitioners called on INEC to enforce the provisions of the Electoral Act and ensure that the PDP's membership register remained consistent with the law.
They also warned that they would seek judicial intervention if the commission accepted any retrospective alteration of the register.
The dispute comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections and the contest over who will emerge as the PDP's governorship candidate in Ogun State.
