The Yobe State Government has received the reports of the Fact-Finding Committees constituted to review the remuneration, allowances, and welfare-related matters affecting staff of the state-owned tertiary institutions.
The reports cover the welfare and remuneration package of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) at Yobe State University (YSU).
The committee also submitted its report on the implementation of the 2024 circular on the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTA), Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and other earned allowances for staff of the seven state-owned tertiary institutions.
The development further underscores the commitment of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, CON, to improving staff welfare, strengthening the education sector and ensuring a conducive environment for teaching, learning and research across the state.
Governor Buni has already demonstrated this commitment by becoming the first Governor in the region to implement the ASUU Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) agreement, including the settlement of arrears, implemented about three months ago.
Speaking while presenting the reports, the Chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Prof. Mohammed Bello Kawuwa, expressed appreciation to Governor Buni for entrusting the committees with the responsibility.
Prof. Kawuwa said the committees carefully considered the issues presented before them and undertook a thorough review before compiling their findings and recommendations for the consideration of the state government.
Receiving the reports on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Mohammed Goje, assured the committees and affected staff that the government would give the recommendations the serious attention they deserve.
Dr. Goje said the welfare of workers remains a key priority of the Buni administration, stressing that the government is particularly committed to ensuring that staff of state-owned tertiary institutions have improved conditions of service that are both fair and sustainable.
“The government has a strong interest in addressing issues affecting the welfare of our staff and improving conditions of service across our tertiary institutions. We will carefully study these recommendations and work towards a realistic and sustainable framework for implementation,” the SSG said
The SSG commended members of the committees for the diligence and commitment demonstrated in undertaking the assignment, urging them to continue to support the government in developing practical and sustainable solutions to challenges confronting the state's tertiary education sector.
The reports are expected to provide an important basis for further government consideration and decisions on remuneration, allowances, earned entitlements and other staff welfare matters across Yobe State-owned tertiary institutions.
The development is part of the broader efforts of the Buni administration to strengthen the state's education system, improve staff morale and create the conditions necessary for quality teaching, research and learning.
