President Bola Tinubu is returning to Abuja after a six-day stay in Lagos during which he marked Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, attended the premiere of a documentary on the late MKO Abiola and held engagements with traditional stakeholders.

The President arrived in Lagos on Tuesday, September 29, following an extended working vacation in Europe, where he spent time in London and Paris.

However, a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu would depart Lagos for Abuja on Monday evening.

His return to Abuja is expected to bring him back to a full schedule at the Presidential Villa, with economic reforms, security and preparations for the 2027 general elections among the issues likely to receive attention.

During his Lagos stay, Tinubu addressed Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast on October 1 to mark the country’s 66th Independence anniversary.

In the address, he highlighted the administration’s reform programme and its efforts to move Nigeria from economic stabilisation to greater prosperity.

The President also attended the national premiere of MKO, a documentary on the life and political struggle of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and the June 12 pro-democracy struggle.

The premiere, held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos, provided an opportunity to revisit the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the subsequent struggle for democratic rule.

Tinubu, who participated in the pro-democracy movement, has repeatedly described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

On Sunday, the President visited the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Akiolu, at the Iga Iduganran Palace on Lagos Island.

The visit further strengthened Tinubu’s engagement with traditional institutions during his stay in the state.

The President’s Lagos visit also took place amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and emerging alliances intensifying their mobilisation.

Tinubu is seeking re-election in 2027, while opposition parties are positioning themselves for a contest that is already generating political debate across the country.

The Presidency has, however, maintained that the administration’s immediate priority remains the delivery of its economic and development agenda, with the benefits of its reforms expected to translate into improved living conditions and greater opportunities for Nigerians.
