Teachers Banditry Protest Spreads To Benue

Teachers protest of insecurity has spread to Benue State, including Enugu State, after the protest erupted in Oyo, later Ogun and Lagos.

Teachers in Benue State, led by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Benue State chapter, joined the protest on Tuesday, calling on both the federal, state and local governments to make safety and security of schools a top priority, now that schools are in session. They stated that unsafe environment make learning impossible.

The State Chairman of Union, Levi Akuma, disclosed this while addressing government officials in Makurdi, shortly after leading a peaceful protest to the Government House.

Benue Teachers, in solidarity with their counterparts in Oyo State over the kidnap of teachers and students, staged a peaceful protest to demand government action for the of release of the kidnapped victims, and for Benue State government to brace up over safety of schools.

They called On stakeholders to take safety of schools as priority. They noted that insecurity affects concentration, attendance and performance of students.

The Benue State government and the representative of the state Police commissioner, assured the teachers that measures have been taken to make schools safe in Benue, as security personnel have been deployed to vulnerable schools.

The Education Commissioner, while assuring of continuous prayers for safe release of the kidnapped teachers and students, the Director General of Home Land Security, further assured of state government collaboration to secure schools in Benue.
