No fewer than six communities in Ibiono Ibom, Akwa Ibom, have been reconnected to the national grid after about 20 years without electricity.
The Chairman, Mr Asuakak Umoh, disclosed this on Friday when he took members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom Council, on a tour of communities in the area.
Umoh said they replaced faulty transformers, damaged cables, and other accessories before reconnecting the communities to the national grid.
He listed Use-Ikot Antono, Ikot Anya Ono, Aka Ikot Udo Eno, Ibiaku Inyang Isong, Ikot Amba and Awat Nkang village as some of the communities that benefited from the gesture.
The chairman said that his administration had recorded tremendous achievements in health, infrastructure, agriculture, education and human capital development.
“We have renovated the primary health centre in Idoro. We employed five medical doctors to ensure effective service delivery at the facility,” he said.
Umoh further said the council had provided well-furnished accommodation for medical doctors in health facilities in the area, and gave them N150,000 as a monthly upkeep allowance.
“The council provides micronutrients and ready-to-use therapeutic food for malnourished children in our rural communities.
“The essence is to improve their health conditions and promote healthy growth,” he said.
Umoh said that the council had invested in agriculture by cultivating five hectares of rice plantation at Ikot Esen.
He listed okra, corn, yam, sweet yam, tomatoes, maize and groundnut as other crops that were cultivated under the council’s agriculture programme.
He said that the council had completed the Traditional Rulers’ Council complex with a 0.45km access road.
“We have renovated the Ibiono Ibom Council Multi-purpose Hall, and furnished the council legislative chamber to facilitate third-tier legislation.
“This administration has provided full university scholarships to 12 indigent students in tertiary institutions from the area,” he said.
Umoh said that the council had distributed customised shoes to 110 pupils in 11 public primary schools in the area.
“We have also distributed 550 customised uniforms to pupils in five public schools, and provided N50,000 monthly stipend to head teachers serving in rural communities.
“We have regularly supported our children who are studying law and medicine. We do same to those undergoing postgraduate studies,” he said.
The council chairman urged Ibiono Ibom people to strengthen their support for the Umo Eno-led government and make inputs that would facilitate greater service delivery.
