The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has commenced operations at its new Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Olojuoro-Olomi, Ibadan, Oyo State, with 80 convicted male inmates admitted into the facility.
The activation of the centre is expected to ease pressure on existing custodial facilities in the South-West, particularly those in Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states.
The Service Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji, disclosed this in a statement, saying the facility became operational following approval by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and a directive from the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche.
The new centre has an initial capacity for 800 inmates, while its capacity is expected to rise to 3,000 when additional sections for awaiting-trial inmates, female inmates and persons on death row are completed.
According to the statement, the facility has modern custodial cells, medical facilities, a kitchen, administrative offices, staff accommodation and enhanced security infrastructure.
The Service said the phased activation would enable it to progressively deploy the facility’s full capacity while strengthening its mandate of humane custody, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.
