The Ekuum Cultural Band of Ofutop Nation will make its debut at the 2026 Calabar Carnival after securing approval to participate as a non-competing guest band.
The band’s Chief Executive Officer, Engr Oyama Osam Ntun, confirmed its registration on Thursday, saying it had met the required criteria and obtained approval from the relevant authorities.
Ntun said the participation would provide an opportunity to showcase the cultural heritage of Ofutop Nation through traditional music, dance and performances inspired by stories passed down through generations.
“Participating in the carnival will avail us the opportunity to exhibit our numerous talents and allow members to tell the different stories passed on to them by their grandparents,” he said.
He added that the band’s entry into the festival was part of efforts to promote local heritage and bring traditional culture to a wider audience.
Ntun, recently named Young Achiever of the Year at the Calabar Heritage Awards, said cultural preservation should go hand in hand with professional development.
The Ekuum Cultural Band’s participation is expected to add to the cultural diversity of the annual festival, which attracts performers and revellers to Cross River State.
Although the band will not compete, its debut will provide a platform to showcase Ofutop traditions and promote the community’s cultural identity at the 2026 fiesta.
