Nigerian Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he deliberately avoids flaunting his wealth and lifestyle excessively on social media.
The 26-year-old singer said he is aware of how many young people look up to him and does not want his success to make them feel pressured or inadequate.
In an interview with Jam FM, Rema said many young people admire his achievements and aspire to reach a similar level of success.
He said this awareness has influenced how he presents himself online, as he does not want anyone to feel they are falling behind because of what they see from him.
“Everybody has their time, but some people just want to rush it because they see their fellow young person doing well,” he said.
Rema added that although some people have advised him not to worry about whether his lifestyle puts pressure on others, he remains mindful of how his public image could affect young people.
“I just care about the kids who are under pressure,” he said, adding that parents also contribute to the pressure many young people face by comparing them with others and pushing them towards careers they may not necessarily want.
The singer said he therefore prefers to keep his lifestyle relatively simple and does not feel the need to constantly showcase expensive designer items.
He explained that his love for streetwear is partly connected to this preference, although he admitted that his chains and watches are among the more lavish aspects of his lifestyle.
Rema encouraged young people not to rush their journey or measure their progress against what they see from others.
“I don’t want anybody to rush their time or pressure themselves because of me. I just like to keep it simple,” he said.
