Nigerian comedian Julius Agwu has opened up about the origin of the term “musicomedy” and revealed that some friends abandoned him after his brain surgery and health struggles.
During the Beer Parlour Talk Show episode titled “Julius Agwu — Back From The Brink,” Agwu reminisced about his role in shaping Nigerian comedy before becoming visibly emotional and tearing up.
“Of that alleged comedy, na me stay, I stayed and form that coinage,” he said. “That music-com, yes na me form am to tell you how my brain dey think na him make everything.”
As his emotions overwhelmed him, Agwu took off his glasses and kept apologizing, expressing gratitude to those who stood by him during the ordeal.
Later, he revealed feelings of betrayal, mentioning that some friends cut off contact after his health troubles.
“My friends deserted me,” Agwu said. “This bishop wey they talk now, he was managing me. Collect my money, do everything, then they stop talking to me, many of them, but God no go leave you.”
The hosts comforted the comedian, reminding him of his influence in entertainment and assuring him that his legacy would endure even if he never performs again.
