Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football, making him the first Nigerian to occupy the position in the organisation’s 70-year history.
The confirmation, announced on Thursday, followed his appointment as acting general secretary in March after the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba.
The Nigeria Football Federation congratulated Adamu, describing his elevation as good news for Nigerian football administration.
The NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, said the federation was pleased with the development and expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to represent Nigeria and Africa effectively.
“This is, indeed, very good news. I am so happy for Samson Adamu on his confirmation, and I know he is going to make Nigeria and Africa proud,” Ikpeme said.
He described Adamu as knowledgeable and well-versed in football administration, adding that the NFF would provide the necessary support to him in his new position.
Adamu joined CAF, whose headquarters is in Cairo, Egypt, as director of competitions before rising to become director of tournaments and events.
He was appointed acting general secretary on March 29 following the departure of Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese football administrator.
The NFF said it wished Adamu success and pledged its support as a member association of CAF.
