Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or has been named the greatest of all time, beating Lionel Messi’s 2012 award in a public vote organised by France Football.
The poll marks the prestigious trophy’s 70th anniversary but does not confer a new official prize. Instead, supporters were invited to choose the best past winner as part of the B.O.A.T. (Ballon d’Or of All Time) ranking.
According to results reported by Spanish newspaper Marca on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Ronaldo’s 2008 award took the top spot. The former Manchester United forward’s win adds a symbolic distinction to his honours list. Unlike the annual Ballon d’Or, decided by a jury, the ranking reflects the public’s choices.
