Nigeria’s Super Eagles Remain 47th On FIFA Rankings

The Super Eagles remained in the 47th position on the latest FIFA rankings released by the world football governing body on Thursday.

The Eagles, reigning African champions, played a friendly match during the period under review as they held Mexico to a goalless draw in Atlanta, United Sates. While the point earned from the outing halted the free-fall of Nigeria on the monthly rankings, it could not help them up the ladder.

Last month the Eagles dropped six places from 41 in January but have now maintained February’s 47th position in March. The Mexicans, somewhat, benefitted from the Eagles friendly as they moved a place up to 20.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s group opponents at the World Cup, Argentina, remained third in the world. Bosnia Herzegovina dropped four places down to 21st in the world while Iran also dropped four places down to 42nd in the world.

Nigeria is now ranked seventh in Africa behind Cote d’ Ivoire (24), Algeria (25), ,Egypt (26), Cape Verde Islands (33), Ghana (35), and Tunisia (44). Egypt is the highest mover from Africa as they moved 12 places up while Cape Verde dropped six places. The other teams in the African top ten include Cameroon (50), Guinea (53), and Mali (56).

No African team made it to the global top ten which is occupied by Spain, Germany, Argentina, Portugal, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Italy, Brazil, and Belgium. The next FIFA ranking will be out on April 10.
