Nigeria has defeated Tunisia in a vote to secure the hosting rights for the 2028 International Table Tennis Federation Africa Championships, with Lagos selected as the venue.
Nigeria polled 23 votes against Tunisia’s 15 at the ITTF Africa Annual General Meeting in Tangier, Morocco, after delegates opted for a ballot to decide the host of the continent’s premier table tennis competition.
A total of 38 votes were recorded, comprising 31 delegates physically present at the meeting and seven authorised proxies.
President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Adesoji Tayo, thanked the delegates for their confidence in the country and pledged to deliver a successful tournament.
“We want to thank all the delegates for putting their trust in Nigeria to host a befitting tournament in 2028 as well as the African Para Championships in 2027,” Tayo said.
He said Nigeria’s experience in organising major international table tennis events would help deliver a seamless competition, adding that Lagos would welcome the continent’s leading players.
Nigeria will also host the 2027 African Para Championships, while Libya will stage the 2027 Africa Cup, Algeria the African Championships and Botswana the Youth Championships.
For 2028, Rwanda will host the Youth Championships and Egypt the Para Championships. The host of the 2028 Africa Cup is yet to be announced.
Nigeria’s successful bid adds two continental competitions to its hosting calendar and is expected to require coordination between the federation, government agencies and other stakeholders.
