The political reconciliation in Rivers State has taken another step forward as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, met Governor Siminalayi Fubara at his private residence in Port Harcourt.
Wike led leaders of the Rainbow Coalition, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda, and Senator Magnus Abe, to the meeting on Tuesday.
The visit marked Wike’s first known meeting with Fubara at the governor’s private residence since their political feud erupted in 2023 and was later resolved.
Although details of the meeting were not officially disclosed, sources said discussions centred on consolidating the peace in the state and preparing the coalition for the 2027 elections.
According to reports, the meeting was “strategic and part of the ongoing fence-mending by the minister ahead of the Rainbow Coalition’s campaign for the 2027 general elections”.
It was further gathered that the meeting was also aimed at strengthening the renewed relationship between the governor and members of his former political camp.
“It is also part of measures to cement the renewed peace in the state. You know the Senator Magnus Abe-led reconciliation committee has met with the governor twice,” the PUNCH quoted a source as saying.
“Now, maybe it’s time for the FCT minister to visit the governor to show that peace has truly returned.”
Abe had previously led a reconciliation committee that held two meetings with Fubara at the Government House to discuss how supporters of the governor could be accommodated in the emerging political arrangement.
Fubara had also publicly declared that he had returned to his political family following the resolution of the crisis.
Tuesday’s meeting reportedly brought together key supporters of the governor and leaders of the Rainbow Coalition, with both sides said to have agreed to collaborate ahead of the 2027 elections.
The coalition is yet to formally commence its campaign in Rivers State.
