The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has threatened to petition the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, over alleged attacks, intimidation and harassment of its members and candidates by governors of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP said the alleged incidents, including killings and arrests of opposition members in some states, could undermine democratic competition and the credibility of the forthcoming elections.

The Chairman of the PDP State Chairmen Forum and Imo State chairman, Austin Nwachukwu, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a meeting between the party’s National Working Committee and state chairmen.

Nwachukwu accused the administration of Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, of creating a hostile political environment for PDP members through alleged intimidation, arrests and harassment.

He said the forum’s leadership visited Ebonyi State last week to intervene and assess complaints from party members.

Nwachukwu said the forum had resolved to petition the IGP and other security agency heads, demanding urgent measures to protect opposition candidates and supporters.

“The killings and harassment of our candidates and governorship candidates, especially in various states of the country, must stop,” he said.

He warned that the forum would not take lightly further alleged attacks or threats against PDP candidates, insisting that electoral contests should be decided by voters rather than intimidation.

The PDP chieftain maintained that all political parties must be allowed to participate freely in the electoral process without threats to the safety of their members.

Despite the concerns, Nwachukwu reaffirmed the commitment of the state chairmen to strengthening the party’s structures and working with the national leadership towards victory in 2027.

Earlier, the PDP National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, expressed confidence that the party would win all elective positions it contests in the 2027 elections.

Mohammed commended the state chairmen for facilitating what he described as smooth nomination processes across the 36 states for candidates seeking seats in the state Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate and governorship positions.

“I want to thank you for making sure that we have a smooth process across the 36 states to enable us to come out with successful candidates,” he said.

The national chairman pledged that the party’s National Working Committee would work with other organs to achieve its electoral objectives, while reaffirming its commitment to the PDP constitution and established procedures.
