Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has mourned the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel killed in the aircraft crash in Ondo State, describing their death as a painful loss to the country.
Obi, in a condolence message posted on X, sympathised with the families, colleagues and loved ones of the victims of the crash.
He said the affected personnel had devoted their lives to defending Nigeria and protecting its citizens, urging the country not to forget their sacrifice.
“These courageous men and women devote their lives to defending our nation and safeguarding our people. Their service and sacrifice must never be overlooked,” Obi said.
He prayed for the eternal repose of the deceased and asked God to grant their families the strength and consolation to bear the loss.
Obi also prayed for the Nigerian Air Force and other members of the Armed Forces, seeking divine protection for personnel serving the country.
“May God continue to watch over all who serve our country and protect them as they carry out their duties,” he added.
NAF confirms 25 dead
GalaxyTV reports that the NAF has confirmed that all 25 people aboard its ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State are dead.
The aircraft, NAF 931, was carrying five crew members and 20 passengers when it crashed during a routine mission from Benin to Lagos.
The Air Force said search-and-rescue operations were immediately launched in collaboration with relevant authorities, but no survivor was found.
The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, described the crash as a “deeply painful moment” for the Nigerian Air Force and the country.
Aneke expressed condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the victims and assured the bereaved families of the service’s full support.
The NAF has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The service also urged the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information, stressing the need to respect the privacy and dignity of the affected families.
Meanwhile, former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi condoled with the Nigerian Air Force and families of the victims.
Obi said the deceased personnel had devoted their lives to defending the country and protecting Nigerians.
“These courageous men and women devote their lives to defending our nation and safeguarding our people. Their service and sacrifice must never be overlooked,” he said.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims and for strength and consolation for their families.
The NAF has opened a condolence register at its headquarters in Abuja for government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, security chiefs and other well-wishers.
