Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat has defended the construction of the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, describing it as an important infrastructure project that has improved connectivity and eased movement across the state.
Hamzat spoke in a post on his official X account following a recent visit to residents of Osborne Foreshore Estate, where he reflected on the decision to build the bridge during his time overseeing the Lagos State Ministry of Works.
He said the project was conceived to reduce time spent in traffic, ease the burden on motorists and improve connections to the growing Lekki Peninsula.
According to him, the bridge was delivered alongside former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola and became a landmark in the development of the state.
Beyond easing the movement of commuters, Hamzat said the bridge had become an iconic feature of the Lagos skyline and demonstrated what vision, innovation and purposeful leadership could achieve.
Responding to criticism and comparisons surrounding the project, the deputy governor said attempts to rewrite its history could not erase its impact on residents.
“Critics may try to rewrite history, make unfair comparisons or turn progress into a political argument but they cannot erase the difference this bridge has made in the lives of the millions of people who use it,” he said.
Hamzat reaffirmed his commitment to what he described as clean, transparent and impactful public service, adding that the state remained focused on infrastructure development and improving the lives of Lagos residents.
He also challenged critics questioning the project's significance to point to their own contributions to infrastructure development.
“And when anyone attempts to undermine projects that have made life better for Lagosians, one simple question is worth asking: What have they built?” he added.
