The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on security agencies to caution former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his remarks describing supporters of President Bola Tinubu as “mad”.
Amaechi made the comments during a town hall meeting organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City on Thursday, where he urged Edo residents to reject Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Reacting in a statement, Edo APC Chairman Jarret Tenebe condemned the remarks, describing them as disrespectful to the people of the state and warning that such statements could heighten political tensions.
Tenebe argued that politicians seeking votes should persuade the electorate through policy debates rather than insult those whose support they want.
He said democracy allowed citizens to support candidates and political parties of their choice, adding that differences in political opinion should be addressed through constructive engagement.
The APC chairman also questioned Amaechi’s temperament, arguing that his response to opposing political views raised concerns about his suitability for the office he was seeking.
Tenebe urged security agencies to caution the former governor against making further inflammatory statements as political activities ahead of the 2027 general election gather momentum.
He also called on Edo voters to reject the ADC and its candidates in the forthcoming elections, describing the party’s influence in the state as insignificant.
