The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has threatened to make it difficult for former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi to campaign in Rivers State following his reported remarks about supporters of President Bola Tinubu.

Amaechi, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reportedly said during an engagement with voters in Edo State that only “thieves and mad people” would vote for Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Reacting to the comments on Friday after meeting with FCT area council chairmen in Abuja, Wike condemned the remarks and questioned Amaechi’s suitability for the presidency.

“A lunatic cannot preside over the affairs of this country! He said those who want to vote for Tinubu are thieves. So, I’m a thief? That’s what he’s saying,” Wike said.

He warned that Amaechi could face opposition if he attempted to campaign in Rivers State while continuing to insult the President’s supporters.

“If he continues along this line, it will be difficult for him to campaign in Rivers State. We will make it difficult for him,” the minister said.

Wike also accused Amaechi of hypocrisy and challenged him to account for projects undertaken during his eight-year tenure as governor of Rivers State.

The minister raised questions about the Justice Karibi-Whyte Hospital project, which he alleged received $39m without being completed. He also criticised a $10m fumigation contract awarded to a Cuban firm and the N68bn Port Harcourt monorail project, which he described as abandoned.

Wike further alleged that $308m from the sale of state-owned gas turbines had been looted. He did not provide supporting documents for the allegations during his remarks.

He accused the media and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of allowing political figures to make inflammatory statements without sufficient scrutiny.
