The Ebon Okwaan Obolo Peace Committee, an advocacy group in Andoni, Rivers, has urged politicians to always conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The committee’s Chairman, Chief Philip Udonsi, made the call in a statement on Monday in Port Harcourt.

Udonsi alleged that some politicians were making moves to trigger fresh cult-related crises in Andoni Local Government Area (LGA).

He warned that the alleged plan, if not addressed early, could be executed during political campaigns, exposing communities to security risks.

He urged communities and religious leaders, security agencies and civil society organisations to intensify peace-building efforts and discourage activities capable of triggering fresh conflicts.

“We are worried over the disturbing body language and conduct of some political actors.

“We suspect their actions could trigger cultism, intimidation and violence, particularly during the campaigns,” he said.

Udonsi, however, commended the local government Chairman, Mr Lucky Otuo, for the efforts to restore peace, security and normalcy in communities previously affected by cult-related violence.

“The chairman’s peace efforts in Muma, Pipeline, Iwokiri and other communities where residents suffered devastating consequences of cult-related conflicts and insecurity are commendable,” he said.

He appealed to politicians and well-meaning individuals to support peace initiatives aimed at rebuilding public confidence and restoring economic activities in local communities.
