The Convener of The Alternative Movement, Segun Showunmi, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s 2017 re-election bid, stressing that only the president has what it takes to steer the country to prosperity.

Showunmi,‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‌ a member of the Tinubu/Shettima 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, made this known at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Showunmi presented a statement entitled “Nigeria Must Not Abandon Its Journey to Prosperity. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: The Promise of a Greater Nigeria, National Stability and Prosperity for All.”

He said Nigeria must not abandon its journey to prosperity and urged Nigerians to vote for continuity in 2027, citing economic reforms, infrastructure projects and long-term national stability.

He argued that Nigeria stands at a defining threshold and must not derail the economic and structural foundations currently being laid across the country.

He added that “my position is clear: I support President Tinubu for a second term because I believe Nigeria must keep moving forward.

“The 2027 presidential election presents us with an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to that future, sustain the work of national renewal and accelerate our march towards prosperity.”

He maintained that the current hardship was the prelude to sustainable national growth, emphasising that reform benefits would increasingly manifest in everyday households.

He said, “Prosperity is around the corner, and it must reach every table.

“The market woman must have a greater opportunity to grow her business, the farmer must have access to better inputs and the young graduate must have more opportunities to build a career.”

He further said a second term under President Tinubu would be a period of accelerated delivery, converting fundamental policy reforms into job creation, industrial expansion, and higher living standards across all six geopolitical zones.

“Countries that achieve lasting prosperity do so by sustaining their development ambitions, strengthening their institutions and giving productive investment the time and stability it needs to flourish. Nigeria deserves that opportunity,” he said.

He noted Nigeria’s vast potential, driven by a young, ambitious population and rich natural resources, had historically been hindered by structural economic bottlenecks, weak infrastructure and limited productivity.

He highlighted Tinubu’s ongoing economic reform agenda as a bold, necessary correction to long-standing market distortions, public finance deficits, and foreign exchange challenges.

“We are not simply trying to manage an economy. We are building the foundation of a nation that can compete, produce, innovate, and prosper,” he stressed.

According to him, lasting prosperity requires consistent purpose rather than constant shifts in political policy.

Highlighting the administration’s performance over the past term, Showunmi pointed to significant policy initiatives across several key sectors.

He identified the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a life-impacting initiative, designed to remove financial barriers to tertiary education and empower young Nigerians with market-relevant skills.

In energy and power, the convener said the passage and implementation of the Electricity Act 2023 decentralised power production, allowing state governments to build local, competitive energy markets.

He also pointed at key multi-billion naira infrastructure projects driving regional integration and economic corridors, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway and Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Highway.

On fiscal reform and security, Showunmi praised the Tinubu administration’s overhauling of national taxation to spur private investment while strengthening public safety institutions to protect farmlands, trade networks and urban centres.

He urged Nigerian youths to view themselves as key drivers of the national transformation project, advocating for enhanced vocational training, digital capabilities and local manufacturing incentives to curb talent migration.

He called on Nigerians to rise above partisan politics and protect the momentum of national development.
