Media personality and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has warned that Peter Obi’s popularity in the South-East and parts of the South-South could threaten President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Momodu also predicted that Obi would defeat Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo in the state, expressing confidence in the former Labour Party presidential candidate’s political influence.
“I can bet my life on it that Peter Obi will humiliate and disgrace Soludo in Anambra State. I have no question about that,” he said during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday.
Describing Obi as a “rock star” in the South-East and South-South, Momodu said his popularity could complicate Tinubu’s efforts to secure support across southern Nigeria.
“The scenario is different this time. Peter Obi will humiliate Tinubu and all his supporters in the South-East and some parts of the South-South. And that’s dangerous for Tinubu,” he said.
Momodu argued that Tinubu would need strong support across the three southern geopolitical zones while also competing for votes in the North to improve his chances of winning the 2027 election.
“For Tinubu to win, he needs to lock down all the three regions in the South, and he now has to go and struggle in the North,” he said.
Despite his prediction about Obi’s electoral strength, Momodu declared his support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is also seeking the presidency on the ADC platform.
He said he would welcome efforts to unite opposition figures ahead of the election, suggesting that a divided opposition could weaken its chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“I’m supporting Atiku, but I will be very happy when people say, ‘Oh, if you people don’t come together, you are going to lose election,’” he said.
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu won the presidency, while Atiku finished second and Obi came third. Obi, however, secured significant support in the South-East and parts of the South-South.
The 2027 election is expected to test the opposition’s ability to build a common front against Tinubu, amid continuing calls for cooperation among political leaders seeking to unseat the APC.
