The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said he will resign if President Bola Tinubu loses the 2027 presidential election in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike made the statement while addressing members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja.
The minister said Rivers State is his home, while Abuja is where he currently works, adding that he could not afford to lose in both places.
According to Wike, the presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, and he would announce his resignation the following day if Tinubu loses in Rivers and the FCT.
“By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said.
He also linked his position as FCT Minister to his ability to deliver electoral support for the President in the territory.
“If I cannot deliver where I work, then I'm not worthy to be here,” he said.
Wike said the administration was working towards building a multi-party coalition in the FCT ahead of the 2027 elections.
He also expressed support for Tinubu's re-election bid and endorsed candidates for legislative positions in the FCT, according to reports of the meeting.
The presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
