The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, alongside the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abia State, and heads of sister security agencies, held a peace accord meeting with representatives of registered political parties and campaign teams at the Police Officers’ Mess, Umuahia., on Wednesday.

The meeting featured a reading of the electoral laws by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) Legal, Abia State Police Command, and an address by the REC, who urged political stakeholders to remain law-abiding and reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in the state.

In his address, CP Afolabi reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to providing adequate, professional and impartial security for all political parties, candidates and their supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections. He highlighted the Command’s proactive security measures, including intelligence gathering and analysis, crime mapping, the revamp of the Cybercrime Unit, and strengthened operational and response mechanisms, in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police.

The CP also acknowledged the directive of the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, OFR, on adequate security for political campaigns and related activities. He urged political parties and their supporters to shun violence, intimidation, inflammatory statements and destruction of property. He further advised all parties and campaign teams to notify the Police in writing ahead of rallies, processions and other political activities to facilitate adequate security arrangements.

The peace accord memorandum was subsequently read by the OC Legal, after which representatives of the various political parties signed the accord individually, pledging their commitment to peaceful political participation.

The Abia State Police Command reiterated its resolve to work collaboratively with INEC, sister security agencies and all political stakeholders to safeguard lives and property and ensure a peaceful, secure and orderly electoral process before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
