The House of Representatives has reiterated commitment to ensuring safety standards in the power sector as well as to address challenges of vandalism, theft, and sub-standard electrical materials in the country.

Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, Hon. Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, made the commitment during a press briefing on the proposed Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry Safety Conference held in Abuja Wednesday.

He said, despite government efforts, problems persist, and the situation calls for strengthened compliance and enforcement of laws and policies to enhance safety standards and regulations.

He added that, the conference aims to bring together stakeholders to share opportunities, prospects, and challenges in safety standards and regulations and also to develop an all-inclusive policy document that will strengthen oversight and investigative responsibilities, enhance capacity building, and strengthen compliance and enforcement strategies.

The conference will also address challenges in renewable energy safety standards and regulations and examine the nexus between electricity safety standards and health and construction policies.
