The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political supporters and others against tearing down, defacing or destroying campaign posters, banners and billboards ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.

In a statement, the Force said it was concerned by reports of deliberate damage to campaign materials belonging to candidates and political parties across the country. It condemned the incidents as acts of political intolerance and urged those involved to stop immediately.

The police said destroying, defacing or unlawfully removing another candidate's campaign materials may amount to malicious damage, a criminal offence under applicable laws, including Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law. It added that political differences or party loyalty do not give anyone the right to damage another person’s property or restrict their right to campaign.

The Force said all political parties and candidates are entitled to equal protection under the law, and no individual or group may decide whose campaign materials can be displayed or destroyed.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has directed commissioners of police in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to take preventive measures, investigate reported incidents, and ensure that those found responsible are arrested and prosecuted. The police added that political sponsors and others who recruit, encourage or facilitate the offences may also be held accountable if evidence establishes their involvement.

The Force urged political parties, candidates and supporters to campaign peacefully and respect others’ rights, warning that those who break the law will face the consequences.
