The Delta State police command has arrested nine suspected cultists in separate operations at Obiaruku and Issele-Ikpitime, while also recovering one locally fabricated single-barreled gun, a cut-to-size gun, cartridges, drugs among others.
The command spokesperson, Edafe Bright, in a statement made available to GalaxyTv, said seven of the suspects were arrested at Ubulu-Uku during an intelligence-led raid, as a search led to the recovery of the guns, drugs, battle axes and phones.
According to the police, the suspects admitted to being members of the Black axe confraternity and made statements regarding their alleged involvement in Internet fraud.
The other suspects were arrested during a cult-related attack on residents of Issele-Ikpitime village, as the divisional police patrol team was deployed to rescue a man who sustained gunshot injury during the attack and evacuated him to hospital for treatment.
Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the cult group who fled the scene during the operation carried out by the police quick response team.
The Delta State police commissioner, CP Samuel Erale, directed that the sources of the recovered firearms and other persons connected with the suspects be identified, as he warned against cult-related violence and illegal possession of firearms.
