The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong warning against the spread of fake news and disinformation, stressing that such actions would undermine public trust and threaten national security. The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi,  while parading suspect arrested in connection with fake news highlighted the risks posed by individuals who use social media platforms to incite unrest.

He revealed that on December 8, 2024, police operatives arrested 38-year-old Destiny Ekhorutomuen in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of Edo State in connection with such crime. The suspect, according to him, is accused of operating multiple social media accounts to spread false and provocative content aimed at discrediting the Nigeria Police.

He reiterated the Nigeria Police Force zero-tolerance policy toward activities that destabilize the nation or tarnish the reputation of government institutions, while emphasizing that spreading fake news is a criminal act under Nigerian law, with serious penalties for offenders. The police urged the public to be responsible when sharing information online, urging caution against content that could threaten national peace and security.
