The Ondo State Government is considering the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and low-cost housing estates to ease transportation and accommodation challenges facing civil servants.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa disclosed this on Wednesday through his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, at the 2026 Public Service Week and Carnival held at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade in Akure.

He said the proposed measures were part of the administration’s efforts to improve workers’ welfare and strengthen public service delivery.

Aiyedatiwa noted that transportation difficulties could affect workers’ punctuality, attendance and productivity, making affordable mass transit an important consideration.

“The proposal for affordable mass transportation, including the provision of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for workers, is therefore worthy of careful consideration as part of our broader workers’ welfare and public service reform agenda,” he said.

On housing, the governor acknowledged the difficulties public servants face in securing decent and affordable accommodation, adding that the state’s existing housing loan scheme was not enough to address the wider deficit.

“We will, therefore, continue to explore feasible approaches to expanding access to affordable housing, including the possibility of developing low-cost housing estates for public servants,” he said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting workers, noting that motivated and adequately equipped public servants were better positioned to deliver effective services to residents.

The state Head of Service, Chief Segun Odusanya, said the carnival offered public servants from different institutions and professional backgrounds an opportunity to interact and build relationships in an atmosphere of friendship and healthy engagement.

He also highlighted initiatives introduced by the administration to improve efficiency in the state’s public service.

The Ondo State chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ademola Olapade, and the Trade Union Congress, Clement Fatuase, called for improved workers’ welfare while acknowledging the government’s efforts in various areas.

The event featured the presentation of awards to outstanding workers across ministries, departments and agencies.

Those present included the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Taiwo Fasoranti; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Prince Segun Omojuwa; and commissioners for Physical Planning, Sunday Olajide; Water Resources, Ayodele Akande; and Commerce, Industries and Co-operatives, Bola Ademuwagun.

Also in attendance was the governor’s Special Adviser on Union Matters, Bola Taiwo.
