The Benue State Local Government Service Commission has approved the promotion of 3,333 local government workers after more than 10 years without promotions in the third tier of government.

The commission's chairman, James Ivever, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Makurdi, adding that another 3,446 staff were undergoing screening to determine their eligibility.

Ivever said the commission received 6,779 names for consideration but cleared only those who met the required conditions.

He attributed the exercise to the approval of Governor Hyacinth Alia, who, he said, authorised the promotion of local government workers.

The chairman said the exercise was part of efforts to improve the local government service and recognise eligible workers who had waited years for career advancement.

He noted that the local government system had previously faced allegations of corruption but said the commission was working to promote transparency in its operations.

He urged the newly promoted workers to see the development as motivation to improve service delivery and demonstrate greater commitment to their duties.

He warned against truancy and laziness, stressing that workers who failed to perform their responsibilities would face sanctions.

The commission said the remaining 3,446 names were still being screened for qualifications and compliance with the promotion requirements.
