The Ogun State Government has taken Mistura Adebayo into its care and begun medical examinations to determine her health status and establish the support she needs after she was reportedly found wandering on two occasions.
The state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed this in a statement signed by its Permanent Secretary, Adebimpe Folusho Obienu.
According to the ministry, the intervention followed reports brought to the attention of former Commissioner for Women Affairs, Adijat Adeleye, by Adetoun Adejobi.
Adeleye subsequently contacted Obienu, who arranged for social workers to visit the police station where Mistura had been taken.
However, the team discovered on arrival that the girl had already been released to her grandmother.
The ministry said it received another report the following day that Mistura had been seen wandering again, prompting a fresh intervention that resulted in her being placed in government care.
It added that the ongoing medical examinations would help establish her condition and identify any health concerns requiring further treatment or support.
The government said it was committed to safeguarding the girl and finding a suitable long-term care arrangement to protect her welfare.
The ministry also urged residents to report cases of gender-based violence, child abuse, neglect, exploitation and other threats to the safety of women and children.
Residents can contact the ministry and its Sexual Assault Referral Centres through the following toll-free lines:
