The Lagos State Police Command has detained a woman over an alleged attempt to steal a newborn baby from P and G Hospital in the Abule-Egba area of the state.

The alleged attempt was foiled on Saturday by hospital workers and patients, while the suspect’s accomplice reportedly fled.

The suspect allegedly disguised herself as a pregnant woman by stuffing pieces of cloth under her clothes, while another woman posed as someone who had come to assist her with delivery.

Videos circulating on social media showed the suspect being confronted by people at the hospital after the alleged plan was uncovered.

The police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident on Sunday, saying the suspect was in custody and efforts were underway to arrest the alleged accomplice.

She said the case would be charged to court after investigations were concluded.

The incident adds to previous reports of suspected attempts to steal newborn babies in Lagos hospitals.

In 2023, a 49-year-old woman, Modinat Faniyi, was arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court over an alleged attempt to steal a newborn from Ahmadiya Muslim Hospital in the Ijaiye-Ojokoro area of Lagos.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that Faniyi allegedly attempted to leave with the baby while the mother was asleep.
