The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has declared that the recent increase in tariff of electricity only affect 15 per cent of the customers. Recall that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had recently announced the new tariff for customers in Band A.

Galaxy Tv reports that the Minister while Speaking at a News Conference hosted by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, said in Band A category, only 481 can provide 20 hours of power. He added that the ministry has mandated the regulatory body to downgrade the rest to other categories. Adelabu also decried the amount allocated to the payment of electricity subsidy in the 2024 budget saying the federal government cannot sustain the payment any longer.

On his part, the Vice Chairman Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, Musiliu Oseni, says the federal government subsidized 90 per cent of electricity generation cost adding that 85 per cent of customers are not affected by the new tariff. He also clarified the fine imposed on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company calling on affected customers to remain calm.

Also, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the briefing was organized to provide adequate and timely information for all Nigerians, especially regarding the new electricity tariff.
