Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to a Quranic citation contest following the President’s recent spiritual visit to Saudi Arabia.
Melaye issued the challenge on Monday in a post on his X handle, saying he was ready to compete with Tinubu in citing verses from the Holy Quran when he returned from performing Umrah, the lesser Hajj.
“Now that Alhaji Bola Tinubu is in Umrah. Immediately he comes back, I challenge him to a Quranic citation competition with me. No one can mock God,” Melaye wrote.
The challenge followed Tinubu’s account of his spiritual experience in Makkah, where he said he prayed for wisdom and resilience to continue leading Nigeria.
The President, who was granted permission to enter the Holy Kaaba with members of his delegation, said he also prayed for national unity, prosperity and the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians across religious and ethnic divides.
Tinubu said he believed his prayers for wisdom and resilience had been answered, recalling that he made a similar request before the 2023 presidential election.
He also cited Surah Aal-Imran, Verse 26, to emphasise that power and authority belonged to Almighty Allah, who could give leadership to anyone and take it away.
The President described his emergence as Nigeria’s leader as a privilege from God and pledged to remain committed to the country’s development.
He also expressed optimism about the economy, declaring that Nigeria had emerged from a difficult period.
“The foundation is solid. The economy has come out of the dark tunnel. It’s inspiring,” he said.
