Barrister Aloy Ejimakor has urged President Bola Tinubu to release political leaders of Igbo extraction who are detained for agitating for Biafra or supporting the right to self-determination.
According to Ejimakor, it is immoral and politically indefensible for any government to solicit Igbo votes while imprisoning Igbos for peacefully expressing a political opinion. He stated that self-determination is a legitimate aspiration recognised under international law; it is not a crime.
"I equally call on Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to follow the example set by Omoyele Sowore and make the unconditional release of these detained youths, and the broader question of justice for Biafra agitators, a clear campaign issue," Ejimakor said.
He said President Tinubu must be confronted publicly and repeatedly on this matter, noting that many have languished for years without trial, including those held at notorious facilities such as Wawa Barracks.
He also called on every Southeast leader currently supporting the Tinubu administration to make the immediate and unconditional release of these youths a non-negotiable condition for their continued support.
"Political loyalty must not come at the expense of the freedom of our young people. Enough is enough. Release them now," he said.
