The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has called for regular intellectual and vocational training for inmates to improve their chances of rebuilding their lives after release.

The Controller of Corrections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Christopher Peter Jen, made the call during the maiden inmates’ debate competition at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja.

The debate, which focused on “Education or Vocational Skills: Which One Is More Important in Preparing Inmates for Life After Release?”, was organised to sharpen inmates’ intellectual abilities, build confidence and encourage positive social interaction.

Jen urged inmates to remain hopeful about their future, saying their present circumstances should not determine what they could achieve after leaving the custodial centre.

He expressed optimism that former inmates could rise to prominent positions in society, including becoming governors and other high-ranking public officials.

The Officer-in-Charge of the facility, Assistant Controller of Corrections Adekunmi Sunday, said the initiative was designed to reposition the centre as a place for reformation and learning.

Representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abuja branch, and other stakeholders also commended the initiative, encouraging inmates not to abandon their ambitions.

The competition featured two teams, with Team A arguing in favour of formal education and Team B making the case for vocational skills. Each team had five speakers.

After the contest, the judges declared Team B the winner.

The service’s emphasis on skills development reflects efforts to strengthen rehabilitation and prepare inmates for reintegration into society by equipping them with practical abilities and knowledge.
